Online Advertising: “Landing Page” Pay Per Click campaign

Posted by Bart on June 16, 2011

I haven’t found anything about this in English on the Internet. French call it “Clic d’arrivee” : Arrival Click (where a Landing Page is a “Page d’Arrivee” in French, Arrival Page).

The “Landing Page Pay Per Click” campaign is a CPC campaign where a click is paid only when the Internet user loads completely the Landing Page.

Sometimes an Internet user clicks on a banner or in an Email but never actually “lands” on the Landing Page: either because the page doesn’t load correctly, or because it loads to slowly, or because the Internet user changes his mind, etc.

A “Landing Page” Pay Per Click campaigns means that the Advertiser or the Agency not only tracks the click, but also the loading of the Landing Page. To achieve that, the Advertiser or the Agency puts a pixel on the page. The click is only counted (and paid) if the page is loaded completely and the pixel fires.

The benefit for the Advertiser is to pay only for “useful” clicks. It is also a solution to avoid Click fraud, when people click on Ads only to get paid.

Online Advertising: Pay Per Click Landing Page

Posted by Bart on June 13, 2011

Now that we understand the importance of the Landing Page in a Pay Per Click (Cost Per Click) campaign, let’s learn more about how this Landing Page should look like and what mistakes to avoid.

Face Forward Media has an interesting article about this:

Pay Per Click – Getting Started

You did your homework, created your ads, set-up a campaign or two, created some ad groups with a tight set of relevant keywords, crafted your ads, set-up your daily budget, set your max bid per keyword and even threw is some negative keywords then sent the traffic to your home page. Sounds like you’re ready to start your Pay Per Click (PPC) campaign doesn’t it? If you do you’d be wrong! In most cases, sending the traffic to your home page is the worst thing you can possibly do.

Online Advertising: Landing Page

Posted by Bart on June 12, 2011

In Online Advertising, a Landing Page is a single page that appears in response to clicking on an advertisement. It is usually a specific page designed to respond to the advertising message the Internet user just clicked on, in order to develop this message and to encourage the visitor to take an action: Register to a Service, Request for a Brochure, Purchase something, etc.

Measuring a campaign performance is not just about the click thru rate of a banner or an email, but goes beyond that. What happens next? Does the Internet user actually land on the landing page? Does he stay on this page? Does he go further? Etc. It is important to know the Internet user’s behavior on a landing page and to  modify this page if needed.

The landing page is a key part of the Advertising process.

Online Advertising: Affiliate Networks

Posted by Bart on June 9, 2011

The first Affiliate Programs have been created and managed solely by Advertisers. Amazon was one of the first companies to conceive and promote an Affiliate Program at a large scale. At this time, everything happened between the Advertiser and its Affiliates: The Advertiser was implementing a program and promoting it. The website owners were subscribing to it and running it on their website.

But this was not always a smooth process.

- Some Advertisers had not tracking tool to effectively track the Affiliates performances,

- Advertisers had more and more Affiliates to manage and to take care of, and for some of them in many different countries,

- With more and more Advertisers and Programs, Affiliates got confused. They needed a third party to make sure that Advertisers were reliable and that numbers were correct.

That’s why Affiliate Network have appeared and quickly became very popular.

Online Advertising: Affiliate Marketing

Posted by Bart on June 6, 2011

Internet Affiliate Marketing is a marketing practice where an Advertiser will promote its products or services through a network of Websites (Affiliates or Publishers) and pay them on a commission basis (revenue sharing).

Affiliate Marketing: How does it work?

The websites (affiliates) that the advertiser accepts to work with will receive the graphical elements (banners, HTML email templates, product sheets, etc.) that they will put on their websites to promote the advertiser’s offer. Affiliate websites will also get a dedicated tracking link, ie a URL that redirects to the advertiser’s page and contains a specific element that will allow the advertiser to know from what website each visitor is coming.

The advertiser’s offer promoted by websites is called an “Affiliate Program” if it is an ongoing offer, or an “Affiliate Campaign” if it is a limited-time only offer.

Online Advertising: Keyword Buying

Posted by Bart on May 30, 2011

Keyword buying is the activity of buying keywords to appear in a good position on Search Engine Results Pages for SEM purposes (see previous post about SEM).

Keyword Buying is possible with all the main search engines, like Google, Yahoo! or Bing.

Note that Keyword Buying is not only used by advertisers but sometimes also by third parties that want to promote an advertiser, for instance in the case of an Affiliate Program.

Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization

Posted by Bart on May 29, 2011

When people think about Search Engine and Advertising, it is usually all about Google and being in the first position in the result page for a specific keyword. However there is more to Search Engine Advertising than Google and result pages.

It is important to clearly make a distinction between SEM and SEO:

What is SEM?

Search Engine Marketing, (SEM), is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of, paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.

In other words, SEM is about buying or bidding on keywords to get a good visibility in the search engine result pages. Google AdWords is a good example of this technique, however it is not the only one.

Other Search Engines offer the same services:

- Yahoo!
- Bing
- Ask.com
- Baidu – China
- Seznam.cz – Czech Republic
- Yandex – Russia
- Rambler – Russia
- Timway – Hong Kong
- Ayna – Arabic Search engine, Middle East & North Africa
- Leit.is – Iceland

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.

In other words, SEO is about optimizing a website to prepare it and get the best results with the Search Engines.

If you consider SEM, you can work directly with the Search Engines and pay them directly. For SEO, you will probably use a third party agency and pay this agency, not the Search Engines.

Both techniques have to be considered to develop a website visibility and traffic on the Internet.
